Recruitment is underway for our next Recreation Leader! As a member of the department’s leadership team, the Recreation Leader assists with identifying community recreational needs and implementing recreational programs for all ages. The position is responsible for planning, organizing, and conducting leisure time activities for one or more specific segments of the community with a focus on Summer Camp and Before & After School programming.

Qualifications: Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma, plus EITHER: Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with an Associate’s degree in Recreation or a closely related field; OR, Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with an Associate’s degree, plus one (1) year of paid full-time or its part-time equivalent experience in recreation or related activities; OR, Two (2) years of paid or volunteer (must be documented) full-time or its part-time equivalent experience in recreation or related activities; OR, Any equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of the above qualifications.
Job Description: The position of Recreation Leader, under the direct supervision of the Director of Parks and Recreation and Assistant Recreation Director, assists with both identifying the recreational needs of the community and the implementation of a community recreation program for all ages. This is a responsible recreation position in which the incumbent plans, organizes, and conducts athletic and/or leisure time activities for one or more specific segments of a total recreation program. The employee assists in program development and implementation with a focus on program instruction. The employee may supervise Recreation Assistants or Recreation Attendants and should possess good knowledge of recreation theory principles and practices; a variety of recreational activities such as arts and organized games, crafts, and nature activities; the rules, regulations, and techniques of athletic activities; community organization; and proper care and storage of equipment. Applicant must be able to work as part of a team as well as independently, have strong social skills, possess excellent customer service skills, and exhibit the abilities to work well with all ages; plan, organize, and direct the work of others; prepare basic reports; communicate effectively; stimulate and guide the interest of others; take initiative; and display resourcefulness.
Typical Work Activities: (All may not be performed. Other related activities may be performed although not listed.)
- Plan and coordinate the Department’s Summer Camp and Before/After School programs;
- Interview, supervise, train, and evaluate program support staff;
- Supervise recreation programs, events, or facilities;
- Plan, coordinate, and/or instruct a variety of seasonal and daily recreation programs, activities, and events;
- Distribute, control, request, and acquire supplies and equipment;
- Maintain simple records of recreation program activities;
- Prepare oral and written reports;
- Inspect facilities and equipment as a safety measure;
- Administer emergency first aid as required;
- Assist with and at special events;
- Attend various professional development and educational opportunities.
Candidates: The successful candidate must have completed the Recreation Leader Civil Service exam and achieved a reachable ranking on the Civil Service eligibility list.
Work Hours: Full-time, 37.5 hours per week, regular hours Monday-Friday, 8:00-4:30 with flexible hours required as per scheduled recreation programs. (Occasional nights, weekends, and holidays)
